"During this pilgrimage there are times when the walls between us come down. We begin to see ourselves, not as Democrats or Republicans, not as members of the House or Senate, not as advocates of differing views, but we see ourselves as Americans on a journey to discover our roots. In Alabama, we move through American history. The air is filled with the story of ordinary people with extraordinary vision willing to give all they had to redeem the soul of a nation. We come away with a deeper appreciation of our democracy, of the importance of our role as legislators, and the power of a determined people to make a difference in our society."Rep. John Lewis (D-GA)

Noted Civil Rights Leaders and Americans such as Dr. Douglas Brinkley, Peter Yarrow (of Peter, Paul and Mary), Dr. Bob Zellner, Bernard Lafayette, Carolyn McKinstry and Juanita Abernathy join Members of Congress at stops in Birmingham, Selma and Montgomery on 3 day passage through living history.

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – “Imagine walking the Civil War battlefields with Ulysses S. Grant. Imagine walking through Revolutionary War sites with George Washington. Kind maker of us all,

From the time we gather at Rayburn to the time we receive our luggage at Reagan, our minds are filled with words:

Spoken words from the memoirs of one girl
Protected by adults from phone calls
But not from their deadly content

Spoken words from the memoirs of another girl
For whom the simple act of adjusting a sash
Becomes a final act of sisterly affection

The Police Motorcade: A Sign of Change
    by Jeannie Choi 03-08-2010

Over the past few days, I’ve had the privilege of representing Sojourners magazine at the annual Faith and Politics civil rights pilgrimage led by Congressman John Lewis. And after half of the first day, I’d already learned a valuable lesson: The best way to travel is with members of Congress – because you get a full police motorcade.
